Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to engage students in authentic learning experiences.
(PSC 2.3/ISTE 2c)
Artifact Flight Operations: Introduction to Meteorology (Lessons)
Reflection
An engaged learning project, this three-lessons plan is part of an online resource tool for high school instructors facilitating Aviation curriculum. The project is part of Georgia's Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) curricula, serving high school students. The project lesson plans were an individual effort that I submitted in the summer of 2012. The standards for meteorology and the ISTE Standards for Coaches, are demonstrated here with student directed learning and research-based strategies. The lessons promote understanding of the Earth’s dynamic atmosphere.
The learning tasks require students to use Web based 2.0 tools and investigate online weather data. Unit tasks enable students to make interpretations of data, along with inferring the likelihood of weather changes. From this learning experience, students are to gain an appreciation of how the safety of air transportation is linked to the task of monitoring current and unknown future weather conditions.
I learned that many details are needed to ensure that the teachers facilitating the lessons have adequate information and sufficient resources. Teachers and students have an appreciation for tasks that are real-world and have step-by-step instructions that are clearly presented. Both elements make the learning more enjoyable. Next time: I will include additional input from my peers for more formative feedback, prior to submitting the final project.
This content project is part of an online resource for CTAE aviation instructors, and the lessons provide a means to execute instruction with consistency across the program. An assessment for content gains were included along with specific content assignments, which provide continuity in program implementation. This curriculum is in use and part of a growing high school program.
